Why do boils cause painful armpit lumps?

A boil usually begins in or around a hair follicle. The local immune response brings fluid and inflammatory cells into the area, while infected material can collect beneath the skin. This makes a tender, warm, red lump that may enlarge and later develop a central spot or drainage. Movement of the arm and friction from clothing can make the area feel more painful.

Not every armpit lump is a boil. An irritated follicle, blocked sweat gland, cyst, enlarged lymph node, or another skin condition can look similar. Repeated lumps, tunnels under the skin, or scarring deserve a separate assessment because they may indicate a longer-term inflammatory condition rather than an isolated boil.

Apply a clean warm compress for short periods, keep the skin clean, and avoid squeezing, piercing, or shaving directly over the lump. Cover drainage with a clean dressing and wash hands after touching it. Do not share towels or razors. A clinician may need to drain a larger collection or prescribe treatment based on the examination.

Seek prompt medical care if redness spreads, pain becomes severe, fever develops, red streaks appear, the lump is near the breast or nipple, or you have a condition or medicine that weakens immune responses. Arrange review for a lump that persists, returns, or does not drain and improve.
