Why does bladder cancer cause difficulty passing urine?

Bladder cancer can make passing urine difficult when a growth, swelling, or blood clots interfere with the bladder outlet or the urethra. Difficulty Passing Urine is a common presentation of Bladder Cancer, but it can also have other causes that need assessment.

Urine leaves the bladder through an opening that leads into the urethra. A tumour near this outlet can narrow the passage or alter the way the bladder empties. Bleeding from the bladder can form clots, which may briefly obstruct the flow. Symptoms can vary from a slow or weak stream to hesitancy, straining, or being unable to start urinating.

Arrange a medical assessment promptly, especially if the change is new or worsening. A clinician may ask about visible blood in the urine, pain, fever, medicines, past urinary problems, and whether you are emptying your bladder. Tests may include a urine sample and checks of the urinary tract; the right tests depend on your symptoms and history.
