Why does bile duct cancer cause jaundice?

Bile is made by the liver and travels through small ducts toward the intestine. Bilirubin, a yellow substance produced when old red blood cells are broken down, is normally carried out in bile. A tumour in or near a bile duct can narrow or block that route. Bilirubin then builds up in the body, which can turn the whites of the eyes and skin yellow.
