Why does benign prostatic hyperplasia cause urinary incontinence?

An enlarged prostate can narrow the urethra and make it hard for the bladder to empty. Urine may remain after passing urine and, if the bladder becomes overly full, small amounts can leak without much warning. This is called overflow leakage. The bladder can also become irritable from working against resistance, causing a sudden urge followed by leakage before the toilet is reached.

Urinary Incontinence is a common presentation of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia. Leakage has other causes too, including infection, neurological conditions, mobility difficulties, and medicines, so it deserves a tailored assessment.

Make a non-urgent appointment if leakage is persistent, embarrassing, or accompanied by a weak stream, straining, or a feeling of incomplete emptying. Note whether leakage follows an urge, happens with a full bladder, or occurs after you have passed urine. This information helps identify the pattern.

Use planned toilet visits if waiting makes leakage more likely, and protect the skin by changing damp clothing or pads promptly. Do not start or stop bladder or prostate medicines without advice from the clinician managing your care.

Seek urgent assessment if you cannot pass urine, have severe lower-abdominal discomfort, develop fever with urinary symptoms, see blood in urine, or become confused or very unwell. Sudden new loss of bladder control with leg weakness, numbness around the groin, or severe back pain also needs emergency assessment.

Ask which type of leakage you seem to have, whether retained urine needs checking, and whether a medicine could be contributing. Discuss treatment goals such as reducing urgency, improving emptying, protecting sleep, and keeping daily activities comfortable.
