Why does bell's palsy cause weakness on one side?

Each facial nerve supplies muscles on its own side of the face. When one nerve is affected, the eyebrow may not lift normally, the eye may not close completely, and the mouth can pull toward the stronger side. Drinking, smiling, and keeping food out of the cheek may feel harder.

Weakness on One Side is a common presentation of Bell's Palsy. Bell's palsy produces facial weakness; weakness of an arm or leg, or a change affecting more than the face, needs urgent consideration of other causes.

Seek prompt medical assessment when facial weakness begins, even if it seems mild. A clinician can examine the face, eye movement, speech, limbs, and balance to identify the pattern. Keep the affected eye moist and protected if the eyelids do not meet; a pharmacist or clinician can advise on suitable eye lubrication.

Use a mirror to check whether the eye closes before sleeping. Choose careful bites and sips if food or liquid escapes from the weaker side, and mention any ear pain, rash, taste change, or sound sensitivity at your appointment.

Call emergency services for a sudden facial droop together with weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, difficulty speaking or understanding, new confusion, severe headache, vision loss, or marked unsteadiness. Get urgent help if you cannot swallow safely, develop breathing difficulty, or have severe eye pain or a red, painful eye.

Ask whether the weakness involves the whole side of the face, how to protect the eye, whether treatment is suitable, and what changes should trigger review. Tell the clinician exactly when the symptoms started and whether they have changed.
