Why does barrett's oesophagus cause persistent indigestion?

Barrett's oesophagus involves a change in the lining of the lower oesophagus after repeated exposure to stomach contents. Reflux can bring acid or other material upwards, causing burning behind the breastbone, sour taste, belching, upper-abdominal discomfort, or a feeling of fullness. The altered lining itself may not cause symptoms; indigestion often reflects the reflux that occurred before or continues alongside the change. Similar symptoms can arise from ulcers, medicines, gallbladder problems, or other digestive conditions.

Discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician, particularly if reflux treatment is not controlling them. Take prescribed acid-reducing medicine as directed and do not stop surveillance appointments without advice. Note meals, lying down, alcohol, smoking, medicines, and symptom timing to help identify triggers. Smaller meals, remaining upright after eating, and avoiding foods that clearly trigger symptoms may help some people, but individual advice matters when symptoms are ongoing.

Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe chest pain, fainting, or sudden difficulty swallowing. Arrange prompt medical review for food sticking, painful swallowing, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight change, persistent hoarseness, or indigestion that is worsening despite treatment. These symptoms need assessment and should not be explained away as ordinary reflux.
