Why Does a Baker's Cyst Cause Knee Swelling?

The knee normally makes a small amount of lubricating fluid. Irritation from arthritis, a meniscus tear, or another joint problem can increase that fluid. Pressure may push some of it through the back of the joint capsule, forming a Baker's cyst. Swelling can therefore appear behind the knee, inside the joint, or both. The area may feel tight after activity or when the knee is fully bent. Knee swelling is a common presentation of Baker's Cyst, although swelling can also result from injuries, infection, or other conditions.

Temporarily limit deep bending, kneeling, and high-impact activity if these increase fullness. Gentle range-of-motion exercises and elevating the leg may be comfortable. A healthcare professional can look for the underlying cause and discuss physiotherapy, medicine, or another treatment when appropriate. Avoid pressing hard on the swelling or attempting to drain it yourself.

Book an assessment if swelling is persistent, worsening, or making it difficult to bend the knee. Seek urgent care for sudden calf swelling, severe calf pain, warmth or redness, faintness, chest pain, or breathlessness. Those features need prompt evaluation because they may reflect a blood-vessel problem or another urgent condition.

Ask what is causing extra fluid, whether the swelling is mainly in the joint or cyst, whether imaging would clarify it, and which movements should be modified while it settles.
