Why Does a Baker's Cyst Cause Knee Pain?

A Baker's cyst is a pocket of joint fluid that bulges into the space behind the knee. The discomfort may feel like an ache, tightness, pressure, or pulling when you bend or straighten the leg. Walking, squatting, or kneeling can increase symptoms when the swollen area is compressed. Arthritis, a cartilage injury, or another source of irritation inside the knee can increase fluid production, so treating the underlying problem matters as well. Knee pain is a common presentation of Baker's Cyst, but knee pain has many possible causes.

Reduce activities that clearly aggravate the knee for a short period, while keeping gentle movement within comfort so the joint does not become stiff. Resting with the leg supported may ease pressure. A clinician can examine the knee and may recommend physiotherapy, pain relief, or treatment for the joint condition that is driving fluid build-up. Do not try to puncture or massage a lump forcefully behind the knee.

Arrange medical assessment if pain persists, limits walking, or returns repeatedly. Seek urgent care for sudden calf swelling or pain, marked warmth or redness, new shortness of breath, or chest pain, because these symptoms can signal a problem that needs prompt assessment rather than a simple cyst.
