Why does atopic dermatitis cause a skin rash?

Atopic dermatitis affects the outer skin barrier, allowing moisture to escape and making it easier for irritants to reach sensitive nerve endings. The immune system responds with inflammation. That response can cause redness, swelling, dryness, scaling, small raised areas, or patches that ooze and crust during a flare. Itching often leads to scratching, which further disrupts the barrier and can keep the rash active.

The appearance may differ by age and skin tone. On darker skin, inflammation may look brown, purple, grey, or darker than the surrounding skin rather than bright red. Rash can occur on the face, neck, hands, elbows, knees, or other areas.

Use a fragrance-free moisturiser regularly, especially after a short lukewarm wash, and choose gentle cleansers instead of harsh soaps. Keep nails short and try a cool compress when itching rises. Avoid known triggers such as fragranced products, rough fabrics, heat, or sweating when these worsen your flares. A clinician may recommend an anti-inflammatory treatment suited to the affected area and your age.

Arrange medical care if the rash is spreading, repeatedly returning, disturbing sleep, or not improving with basic skin care. Seek prompt advice for increasing warmth, pain, swelling, pus, yellow crusting, fever, or rapidly worsening areas, which can signal infection. Emergency help is needed for breathing difficulty or sudden swelling of the lips, tongue, or face.
