Why does atopic dermatitis cause dry skin?

Short answer
Most people with Atopic Dermatitis notice dry skin because the skin barrier loses moisture and becomes easier to irritate.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main mechanism
- Moisture escapes through a weakened skin barrier.
- Common result
- Tight, rough, scaly or irritated skin.
What is happening in the skin
Atopic Dermatitis is a very common presentation of Dry Skin. In this condition, the outer barrier does not hold water as effectively. Moisture escapes from the surface, while soaps, sweat, fragrances and changes in weather can enter or irritate more readily. That irritation activates inflammation, which can bring redness, rough texture, scaling and more itch. Scratching then removes some of the protective surface and keeps the cycle going. Dryness may be most noticeable on the hands, face, folds of the arms or legs, but it can affect other areas too.
Ways to reduce dryness
Use a fragrance-free cream or ointment soon after a short, lukewarm wash, while the skin is still slightly damp. Reapply when the skin feels tight, and choose gentle, non-foaming cleansers for areas that need washing. Avoid vigorous rubbing, rough fabrics and heavily scented products. Keep fingernails short so scratching causes less damage. A clinician can recommend an anti-inflammatory treatment when inflammation is active; moisturiser alone may not settle a flare.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a dermatology review if dryness keeps returning despite regular moisturising, disturbs sleep, or makes normal activities difficult. Seek prompt care if the skin becomes increasingly painful, warm, swollen, oozing or covered with spreading crusts, since these changes can signal infection. Urgent help is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a rapidly worsening reaction.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which moisturiser texture suits the affected area, whether a cleanser or product may be aggravating the dryness, and what treatment plan to use when redness or itch returns.

Questions people ask
Can dry skin make atopic dermatitis worse?
Yes. Loss of moisture can increase surface irritation and make itching and inflammation easier to trigger.
Should I moisturise during a flare?
Usually, yes; use a fragrance-free cream or ointment, and ask a clinician which additional treatment is appropriate for active inflammation.
