Short answer

Most people with Asteatotic Eczema notice dry skin because the outer barrier loses protective oils and allows water to escape.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the dryness means

Asteatotic eczema, sometimes called craquelé eczema, develops when skin becomes unusually dry and fragile. Fine cracks can form in a network-like pattern, especially on the lower legs, arms or trunk. Cold air, low humidity, long hot showers, harsh cleansers and frequent washing can remove more surface oil. Once the barrier is disrupted, moisture leaves more readily and irritants can enter, which may increase roughness, scaling, stinging or itching. Dry skin is a very common presentation of Asteatotic Eczema, but dryness can also have other causes.

Ways to support the skin barrier

Use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser only where needed and keep bathing warm rather than hot. Pat the skin dry, then apply a thick cream or ointment while it is still slightly damp; reapply whenever the skin feels tight. Ingredients such as petrolatum, ceramides or glycerin can help reduce water loss. Avoid scrubbing flakes, picking cracks and fragranced products on irritated areas. Loose, soft clothing can reduce rubbing. A clinician may recommend a short course of an anti-inflammatory treatment when redness and inflammation persist.

When to seek medical care

Arrange an assessment if cracks are painful, bleeding, spreading or not improving with regular moisturising. Seek prompt care for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, fever or rapidly worsening tenderness, which can signal infection. A clinician can also check persistent dryness for psoriasis, contact irritation or another skin condition and tailor treatment to your medicines, age and health.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern fits asteatotic eczema, which moisturiser texture suits your skin, how often to use any prescribed treatment, and which cleansers or bathing habits may be worsening the cracks.

Questions people ask

Can bathing make asteatotic eczema drier?

Long, hot bathing and strong cleansers can remove surface oils, so shorter warm showers and prompt moisturising are gentler choices.

Will moisturiser heal every cause of dry skin?

Moisturiser supports the skin barrier, but persistent, painful or unusual dryness needs an assessment for other causes.
