Why Does Angioedema Cause Swollen Lips?

Angioedema affects deeper skin and soft tissue rather than only the surface. In response to an allergic trigger, a medicine, an infection, or another immune signal, substances can widen small vessels and make their walls more permeable. Fluid then moves into tissue around the lips, producing sudden fullness, tightness, or asymmetry. Most people with Angioedema notice swollen lips, and the swelling may occur with facial swelling, hives, or itching. Some episodes occur without hives, so the absence of a rash does not explain the cause by itself.

Stop and record any newly started medicine, food, supplement, or product and seek medical advice about whether it should be continued. Do not deliberately re-test a suspected trigger. Follow a clinician-provided emergency plan if one exists. A healthcare professional can review timing, associated symptoms, medicines, and previous episodes to guide prevention and treatment.

Call emergency services immediately if lip swelling is accompanied by tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, a hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These signs can indicate swelling of the airway. Do not wait for the lip swelling to settle before seeking urgent help.
