Why does angioedema cause facial swelling?

Angioedema is swelling in deeper tissues, often around the lips, eyelids, cheeks, tongue, hands, feet, or genitals. Chemical signals can make blood vessels more permeable, allowing fluid to move into nearby tissue. Because the face has loose soft tissue, the change may be noticeable over a short period.

Facial Swelling is a very common presentation of Angioedema. The swelling may be itchy when it occurs with hives, but it can also be non-itchy and feel tight, warm, or uncomfortable.

Treat a known episode according to your personalised plan. If you suspect a medicine, food, insect sting, or another exposure triggered the swelling, avoid further exposure until you have discussed it with a clinician. Take clear notes or photographs of the swelling and timing, as they can help identify a pattern.

A clinician may ask about previous episodes, hives, new medicines, family history, and symptoms involving the mouth or throat. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice unless you are told to do so in an emergency.

Call emergency services immediately if swelling affects the tongue, throat, or mouth, or if there is trouble breathing, swallowing, speaking, dizziness, collapse, or a rapidly worsening rash. Swelling near the airway can progress and needs urgent assessment even if it began mildly.

Ask what may be triggering your episodes, whether your regular medicines could contribute, and what emergency plan is appropriate for you. If episodes recur without hives, ask whether specialist assessment is needed to clarify the type of angioedema.
