Why does anaphylaxis cause difficulty swallowing?

Swelling can progress quickly and may occur with a tight throat, hoarse voice, wheeze, hives, vomiting, dizziness, or collapse. Difficulty Swallowing is a common presentation of Anaphylaxis, and it needs emergency action when it begins during a suspected severe allergic reaction.

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction in which immune chemicals can cause blood vessels to leak fluid into tissues. In the lips, tongue, mouth, and throat, that swelling can interfere with swallowing and breathing. A person may feel that food, saliva, or their throat is difficult to manage even before the airway seems visibly blocked.

Symptoms do not have to follow a fixed order. Because throat symptoms can worsen, do not wait to see whether they settle on their own.

Treat suspected anaphylaxis as an emergency. Use an adrenaline auto-injector immediately if one has been prescribed, following the device instructions, then call emergency services. Lie down with legs raised if possible; if breathing is difficult, sit with legs outstretched. Do not give food, drink, or tablets to someone who cannot swallow safely.

Call emergency services now for throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, tongue or lip swelling, noisy breathing, shortness of breath, widespread hives with illness, faintness, or collapse after a possible allergen exposure. Emergency assessment is still needed after an adrenaline auto-injector is used, as symptoms can return.

After emergency care, ask what may have triggered the reaction, whether allergy testing or specialist referral is appropriate, and how to use and carry prescribed adrenaline auto-injectors. Ask for a written emergency plan and discuss how family, school, or colleagues can recognise the symptoms.
