Why does allergic rhinitis cause postnasal drip?

The nose makes mucus normally to trap particles and keep its lining moist. When a trigger such as pollen, dust mites, animal dander, or mould activates an allergy response, the lining becomes inflamed and mucus production can increase. You may feel mucus in the throat, need to clear your throat, cough more when lying down, or notice a hoarse voice. Postnasal Drip is a very common presentation of Allergic Rhinitis.

The sensation can be bothersome even when little mucus comes out of the front of the nose. Other causes include a cold, sinus inflammation, reflux, dry air, or irritants, so persistent symptoms may need a broader assessment.

Drink fluids through the day and try to avoid frequent forceful throat clearing, which can irritate the voice box. Instead, take a sip of water or swallow when possible. Reducing contact with known triggers, washing after outdoor exposure, and keeping the sleeping area free from dust can support allergy control.

Saline nasal rinsing may help move mucus out of the nose when done with clean water and a clean device. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether allergy medicine or a nasal treatment is appropriate for you. Describe whether mucus is clear or discoloured and whether symptoms change with meals or lying down.

Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, or inability to swallow saliva. Arrange a medical review for a cough that persists, wheezing, fever, facial pain, blood in mucus, unexplained weight loss, or continuing hoarseness. These signs may need assessment for causes beyond nasal allergy.

Ask which triggers are most plausible, whether reflux or sinus disease could be adding to the problem, and how to use a nasal treatment correctly. Mention sleep disruption, cough, voice changes, and any treatment you have already tried.
