Why does allergic conjunctivitis cause itchy eyes?

Pollen, dust mites, animal dander, mould, or another trigger can settle on the eye surface. In a sensitised person, the immune response releases histamine and other inflammatory chemicals. Tiny blood vessels widen and fluid can move into nearby tissue, producing itchiness, watering, puffiness, and sometimes a stringy discharge.

Itchy Eyes is a very common presentation of Allergic Conjunctivitis. Itching in both eyes with sneezing or a runny nose can fit an allergy pattern, but itchy eyes also have other causes, including dryness, eyelid irritation, or contact-lens problems.

Try not to rub your eyes, as rubbing can release more inflammatory chemicals and make the sensation stronger. A cool clean compress over closed eyelids may feel soothing. Wash hands after outdoor activities and avoid touching the eye area.

Reducing contact with a suspected trigger may help: keep windows closed when pollen is troublesome, rinse your face after being outdoors, and consider changing clothes after exposure. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether lubricating drops, allergy eye drops, or other treatment is suitable, especially if you use contact lenses.

Arrange prompt assessment for eye pain, light sensitivity, blurred or reduced vision, marked swelling, an injury, or a feeling that something is stuck in the eye. Seek urgent care if a chemical has entered the eye; rinse it with clean running water while getting help. Contact a clinician if symptoms persist, affect daily activities, or do not improve with avoiding triggers.

Ask what may be triggering the symptoms, whether your eye appearance suggests allergy or another cause, and which drops are appropriate alongside contact-lens use. If symptoms recur at certain times or places, describe that pattern and any nasal or skin symptoms.
