Why does acid reflux cause sore throat?

The throat is not designed for repeated contact with acidic stomach contents. Irritation may feel like burning, dryness, a scratchy throat, cough, or a need to clear the throat, sometimes more noticeable after meals or on waking. Sore Throat is a common presentation of Acid Reflux. A sore throat can also result from viruses, bacterial infections, allergies, dry air, mouth breathing, or smoking, so it should not be assumed to have one cause.

Try eating earlier in the evening, staying upright after meals, and avoiding foods or drinks that consistently bring on reflux. Water and a gentle voice can be kinder to an irritated throat than repeated clearing or shouting. If dry indoor air contributes to discomfort, regular fluids and avoiding smoke exposure may help. Discuss recurring symptoms with a clinician or pharmacist before relying on medicine for a long period.

Seek urgent care if you have difficulty breathing, drooling because swallowing is impossible, severe neck swelling, or rapidly worsening throat symptoms. Arrange medical review for pain that persists, difficulty or pain when swallowing, a persistent hoarse voice, a neck lump, blood in saliva, or unintentional weight loss. These signs need examination of the throat and surrounding structures.

Tell your clinician whether symptoms occur after meals, at night, or alongside heartburn, coughing, or a sour taste. Ask whether reflux management, an examination of the throat, or another cause should be considered.
