Why does acid reflux cause chest pain?

The food pipe runs through the chest, so irritation there may be felt behind the breastbone. Symptoms can occur after a large meal, with bending, or when lying flat. Some people also notice a sour taste, regurgitation, burping, or discomfort that travels toward the throat.

Chest Pain is a very common presentation of Acid Reflux. Even so, chest pain can come from the heart, lungs, muscles, or other structures, and the feeling of pain cannot safely identify the cause by itself.

If symptoms are mild and familiar, avoid lying down soon after food and choose smaller meals. Take note of foods, drinks, body positions, and medicines that seem to bring on episodes. A clinician or pharmacist can help you decide whether a reflux treatment is suitable.

Do not rely on self-treatment to explain a new chest symptom. Tell a clinician whether pain is linked to exertion, eating, breathing, movement, or stress, and describe any associated breathlessness or palpitations.

Seek emergency care now for new, severe, crushing, spreading, or persistent chest pain, especially with shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, fainting, dizziness, or pain in the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. Seek prompt assessment for recurring chest pain even when reflux seems possible.

Ask which features support reflux and which need investigation for another cause. Discuss when symptoms occur, whether swallowing hurts, and whether any regular medicines or pain relievers could be worsening irritation.
