What should you know about white welts on skin?

Hives are raised, pale-centred or skin-coloured patches that can itch, sting, or burn. Individual welts often change shape or position as the skin reaction settles. They may follow an infection, heat, pressure, a medicine, food, or an insect bite, although a trigger is not always found.

Deeper swelling can affect the lips, eyelids, tongue, hands, or other areas and may occur with hives or on its own. A rash that stays fixed in one place, bruises, blisters, peels, or causes significant pain is less typical of ordinary hives and deserves assessment.

Note when the welts began, how long each patch lasts, recent foods, medicines, illnesses, heat, exercise, pressure, and products touching the skin. Use cool measures, avoid rubbing, and wear loose clothing. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an oral antihistamine is suitable; do not take someone else’s prescription.

If episodes recur, keep photographs because the skin may look normal between flares. A clinician may discuss antihistamine treatment and, for selected severe situations, a short course of oral corticosteroid treatment. Treatment should match the cause and your medical history.

Call emergency services immediately for welts with swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or difficulty swallowing. Seek prompt medical review for fever, painful or bruising welts, skin peeling, or swelling that is rapidly worsening. These warning signs require attention regardless of how common hives may be.

Ask whether the pattern fits hives or another rash, which triggers are worth avoiding, whether your medicines could contribute, and what emergency symptoms should change your plan. Bring photographs and a complete list of medicines, supplements, and recent illnesses.
