What should you know about white sunburn?

Sunburn commonly causes warmth, tenderness, and redness, but the appearance can change as the skin heals. Peeling may expose lighter new skin, while fluid-filled blisters can look pale or whitish. Patchy colour can also follow inflammation, pressure from clothing, or uneven exposure. A white area that was present before the burn, has a sharp border, or does not settle as the skin recovers may have another explanation. Do not assume every pale patch is a burn.

Move out of direct sun, cool the skin with a clean damp cloth, and apply a bland moisturiser without fragrance. Drink fluids and wear loose clothing that does not rub. Leave blisters intact and do not peel loose skin. Avoid numbing products or harsh scrubs on broken skin. Once healed, protect the area with clothing and sunscreen. Emollient Therapy may help dryness; topical corticosteroids should be used only when a clinician recommends them for a specific inflammatory problem.

Seek medical care for extensive blistering, severe pain, marked swelling, fever, vomiting, confusion, faintness, or difficulty drinking. Arrange review if the area becomes increasingly red, warm, swollen, or produces pus, or if a pale patch persists after peeling has stopped. Prompt assessment is also sensible for burns involving the eyes, face, hands, or genitals.
