What should you know about white striations on nails?

A line that grows outward with the nail may follow pressure, picking, manicuring, or another temporary disturbance near the nail root. Surface white patches or rough, powdery areas can occur with superficial fungal infection. Nail psoriasis may cause pits, separation, or changes in texture as well as altered colour. One affected nail after an injury suggests a different pattern from several nails changing together. A clinician may examine the nail surface and surrounding skin, and may test debris before recommending antifungal treatment.

Keep nails trimmed and dry, and avoid scraping or buffing the white areas. Use gloves for prolonged contact with water or cleaning products, and do not share nail tools. Check the skin between the toes and around other nails for scaling or itching. Take a clear photograph as the nail grows so you can describe change over time. Avoid starting oral treatment based on appearance alone; fungal and inflammatory nail changes can look similar.

Arrange a dermatology review if the streaks spread, the nail becomes painful, thick, crumbly, lifted, or dark, or several nails change without an obvious injury. Seek prompt care for swelling, pus, increasing warmth, or severe tenderness around the nail. People with diabetes, reduced circulation, or a weakened immune system should seek advice early when a nail problem develops.
