White Ringworm: What It Looks Like and What to Do

Ringworm often forms a patch with a more noticeable edge, surface scale, itch, or gradual outward spread. The centre may look clearer or lighter than the border, but not every fungal patch forms a perfect ring. Colour can be less obvious on some skin tones, and treatment or healing can leave temporary colour variation. Other rashes can also scale, so a clinician may need to examine the edge and ask about contact with people, pets, shared towels, sports equipment, or damp surfaces.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid scratching. Do not share towels, clothing, bedding, brushes, or sports gear; wash items that contact the patch and let them dry fully. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether Topical Antifungal Treatment is suitable. More extensive, recurrent, scalp, nail, or difficult-to-treat infection may need Oral Antifungal Treatment prescribed after assessment. Follow the recommended course even if the surface starts to look better.

Arrange a review if the patch keeps spreading, returns, involves the scalp or nails, affects a child, or does not improve with appropriate treatment. Seek prompt care if there is pus, marked pain, fever, rapidly increasing redness, or swelling. A diagnosis matters because steroid creams used alone can make a fungal rash harder to recognise and control.
