What should you know about white people sunburn?

Sunburn is an inflammatory reaction to ultraviolet radiation. On very fair skin, colour change may be easy to see, but the amount of visible redness does not fully describe the irritation or depth of injury. Symptoms can develop after the exposure and may include warmth, soreness, swelling, tightness, and later peeling. Blisters suggest a more substantial burn and should be protected from friction. Repeated unprotected exposure contributes to sun-damaged skin over time, including uneven texture and pigment changes.

Move out of the sun, cool the skin with a clean cool compress or a lukewarm shower, and drink fluids. Apply a bland moisturiser or emollient therapy once the skin is comfortable with it. Wear loose clothing and leave blisters intact; if one breaks, keep the area clean and covered with a non-stick dressing. Avoid further ultraviolet exposure while healing, and do not peel loose skin or use harsh scrubs, alcohol, or numbing products that irritate the area. A clinician can advise whether a topical corticosteroid is appropriate for a particular inflammatory reaction.

Get urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to drink, breathing difficulty, or signs of heat illness. Arrange medical assessment for extensive blistering, severe pain, facial or eye involvement, infection signs, or a burn in a young child. Increasing redness, swelling, pus, or fever after the initial reaction also needs review.
