What should you know about white moles on skin?

Moles can vary in colour, and a pale centre or halo may occur around some marks. Other possibilities include a scar, post-inflammatory colour change, or a different type of skin lesion. The pattern, border, surface, duration, and whether the mark is changing help a clinician decide what it may represent. A phone photograph can document change, but it cannot replace an examination.

Take a clear photograph beside a ruler and note when you first noticed the spot, then arrange a skin assessment if it is new, changing, itchy, sore, crusted, or bleeding. Do not shave, freeze, or apply acids to it yourself. If removal is appropriate, a clinician may discuss mole removal or surgical excision; tissue may be sent for laboratory examination when needed.

Seek prompt medical review for a spot that changes in shape or colour, develops several distinct shades, repeatedly bleeds, forms a persistent crust, or becomes an open sore. Urgent help is appropriate for uncontrolled bleeding or rapidly worsening swelling.
