What Do White Lines in Nails Indicate?

A pale mark may appear after pressure or a knock to the nail, even when the original event was easy to forget. The mark then moves towards the tip as the nail grows.

A single, sharply defined white spot or line is commonly associated with local trauma, such as nail biting, manicure pressure, or an impact. Several lines across the nail can follow repeated interruption of nail growth. This pattern is sometimes called leukonychia.

Pitting, roughness, separation, or a chalky surface can occur with nail psoriasis. Changes affecting many nails, recurring without an obvious injury, or involving the skin and hair deserve a broader clinical review.

Take a clear photograph and note whether the mark is moving outward with nail growth. Keep nails trimmed, avoid picking beneath them, and pause activities that repeatedly press or injure the nail. Do not scrape or file away a white line to diagnose it.

Arrange a dermatology or primary-care assessment if the change does not grow out, affects several nails, or comes with pain, swelling, itching, nail separation, or skin changes. Seek prompt medical advice for a nail that becomes very painful, red, swollen, or drains fluid, particularly after an injury. Arrange an appointment soon for a new or changing mark that does not move with nail growth, involves the surrounding skin, or is accompanied by broader symptoms such as persistent fatigue or feeling unwell.

A clinician can examine the nail surface and surrounding skin and decide whether testing is needed. A persistent colour change is not a diagnosis by itself, so the appearance should be interpreted alongside its timing and other findings.

Ask whether the line looks like a growing-out injury, a fungal change, or nail psoriasis; whether a nail sample or other test is appropriate; and which nail-care products or habits could be contributing. Mention recent manicures, trauma, new medicines, and any changes on other nails or skin.
