What should you know about white lines down nails?

Lines that run from the base toward the tip are often linked with ridging or an uneven nail surface. Repeated wet work, picking, manicures, or minor trauma can make them more visible. White change can also accompany nail fungus or nail psoriasis, particularly when there is thickening, crumbling, pitting, lifting, or tenderness.

One nail changing after local irritation suggests a different pathway from several nails changing together. A clinician considers the pattern, nearby skin, other nails, general health, and any medicines rather than diagnosing from colour alone.

Use a gentle moisturiser on the nails and surrounding skin, wear gloves for prolonged contact with water or cleaning products, and avoid buffing the surface. Remove artificial nails carefully and allow irritated nails to recover. Photograph the change so you can compare it over time.
