What should you know about white line in nail bed?

A narrow white mark may appear after pressure or a small injury to the nail-forming area. It can move toward the tip as the nail grows. White change can also occur with nail fungus or nail psoriasis, especially when the nail becomes thick, brittle, crumbly, ridged, or separated from the skin.

The position matters: a mark that grows out with the nail differs from a change that stays fixed near the base or spreads. Looking at several nails, the surrounding skin, and the nail surface helps a clinician decide whether testing is useful.

Take a clear photograph and note whether the line moves as the nail grows. Keep the nail trimmed, dry, and protected from picking, harsh chemicals, and repeated pressure. Avoid scraping beneath it or starting antifungal tablets without a diagnosis.

Arrange an appointment if the line persists, affects several nails, or comes with thickening, pain, swelling, odour, or nail separation. Treatment depends on the cause; confirmed fungal disease may require an antifungal plan, while psoriasis needs a different approach.

Seek prompt assessment for a new mark that does not grow out, rapidly changes, causes bleeding, or is associated with marked pain, redness, pus, or swelling. An injury that has damaged the nail or fingertip also warrants medical advice.
