White heat rash

Heat rash may feel prickly, itchy, or mildly sore and commonly affects areas covered by clothing, skin folds, the neck, chest, back, or hairline. The bumps can be white, clear, skin-coloured, or red depending on how deeply sweat is trapped and how irritated the skin becomes. Sweating, occlusive fabrics, friction, and a hot environment can make it worse. Skin bumps, skin rash, and skin redness are descriptions rather than diagnoses; eczema, folliculitis, contact irritation, and infection can look similar.

Move to a cooler place, loosen clothing, and keep the affected skin dry and clean. Wear lightweight breathable fabric and take cool showers or use a cool damp cloth. Avoid heavy oils, fragranced products, vigorous scrubbing, and scratching while the skin is irritated. A bland moisturiser may help once the skin is cool and dry; emollient therapy is useful when dryness accompanies irritation, but a thick occlusive layer can worsen trapped sweat. A clinician may recommend a short course of topical corticosteroids for selected inflammation, not as a routine self-treatment.

Seek medical advice if the rash does not improve after cooling, keeps returning, becomes painful, develops pus, or spreads beyond sweaty areas. Get prompt help for fever, marked swelling, severe tenderness, dizziness, confusion, breathing trouble, or a person who seems very unwell in the heat. These signs may indicate infection or a heat-related illness rather than simple heat rash.
