What is a whisper test for the ear?

The test compares how you respond when one ear is assessed at a time. It can raise a concern about reduced hearing, but it does not measure hearing precisely or identify the cause. Background noise, the words used, and the examiner’s voice can affect the result. A formal hearing test can measure hearing at different pitches and help separate problems involving sound conduction from those involving the inner ear or hearing nerve.

Book a clinical review if you notice difficulty following conversation, asking people to repeat themselves, or turning the television louder than others prefer. The clinician may look in the ear for wax, infection, or other visible changes and may arrange audiometry. Avoid putting cotton buds, pins, or other objects into the ear canal, as they can push wax deeper or injure the ear. Note whether the change affects one ear or both, and whether it is gradual or sudden.

Seek urgent medical advice for sudden hearing loss, a hearing change with severe dizziness, new facial weakness, drainage after an injury, or intense ear pain with fever. Ringing, a feeling of fullness, or spinning dizziness can provide useful clues during assessment. These symptoms do not establish a particular diagnosis, but they should be described clearly to the clinician.

Ask whether the whisper result needs confirmation with a hearing test, whether earwax could be affecting hearing, and whether you should be referred to an ear, nose, and throat clinician or audiologist. Mention noise exposure, ear operations, medicines, dizziness, and any family history of hearing loss.
