Which specialist treats tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, usually caused by an infection. A GP can examine the throat and neck, ask about fever, sore throat, earache and swallowing, and consider whether testing is appropriate. Strep throat is one possible bacterial cause of throat symptoms, but not every sore throat or enlarged tonsil is due to strep. The findings help the clinician decide on symptom care, testing, or antibiotic treatment.

Make a GP appointment when throat pain is significant, swallowing is difficult, or symptoms are not settling. Rest, fluids and soft foods can make eating and drinking easier. Use pain relief only according to the product instructions or clinical advice. If antibiotics are prescribed, take them as directed and ask the clinician what to do if your symptoms worsen or a new rash appears.

Get urgent medical help if you are struggling to breathe, cannot swallow saliva, cannot open your mouth normally, have a muffled voice, or develop rapidly increasing neck swelling. Seek prompt advice if you cannot drink enough to stay hydrated or become markedly drowsy. These signs can indicate a more serious throat or neck problem and need assessment without delay.

Ask whether the cause appears viral or bacterial, whether a throat test is useful, and whether antibiotics are appropriate. If episodes happen repeatedly, ask when ENT referral should be considered and what information to record between appointments.
