A stroke happens when part of the brain is damaged by interrupted blood flow or bleeding. Emergency clinicians assess the symptoms and arrange urgent brain imaging to identify the type of stroke. Neurologists or stroke physicians direct ongoing treatment, while nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and dietitians may help with rehabilitation. The exact team depends on the person’s symptoms and needs.

Call emergency services immediately if someone develops sudden weakness on one side, slurred speech, facial drooping, new blurred vision, loss of balance or confusion. Do not drive the person yourself or wait to see whether symptoms fade. Note when the person was last known to be well, because that information helps the hospital team make urgent treatment decisions.
