Which specialist treats strep throat?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat caused by group A streptococcus. A clinician will ask about sore throat, fever, swallowing and close contacts, then examine the throat and neck. They may use a throat swab or rapid test where available. Tonsillitis can have similar symptoms, but its causes can differ, so testing and examination help guide the next step.

Book a GP consultation when a severe sore throat, fever or swollen glands make strep throat a concern. Drink fluids, choose soft foods if swallowing hurts, and use pain relief only as directed on the label or by a clinician. If antibiotic treatment is prescribed, take it exactly as instructed and ask what to do if you miss a dose or develop a rash.

Get urgent medical help if breathing is difficult, you cannot swallow saliva, your voice becomes muffled, or swelling in the neck is increasing. Seek same-day advice for marked dehydration, severe worsening pain, or a rash alongside fever. These symptoms need assessment even when the cause has not yet been confirmed.

Ask whether a test is needed, whether antibiotics are appropriate, and how you will know the infection is improving. If throat infections keep returning, ask whether an ENT assessment would help and whether another condition could be contributing.
