Rubella is a viral infection, also called German measles. It can cause a rash, mild fever, swollen glands, and joint pain, although the pattern varies. The clinician may use your symptoms, exposure history, and testing to clarify the cause because several illnesses can look similar.

Rubella is particularly important to address in pregnancy because infection can affect the developing baby. Calling ahead lets the clinic arrange a safer visit and reduce exposure to other patients.

Telephone a GP clinic or paediatric service for advice rather than arriving without notice if rubella is suspected. Follow instructions about staying away from school, work, and close contact while the diagnosis is being clarified. Note when the rash began, any fever or joint symptoms, recent travel or contact with someone unwell, and vaccination history if known.

Seek medical advice promptly if you are pregnant, could be pregnant, or have close contact with a pregnant person. Urgent assessment is also appropriate for trouble breathing, severe headache, marked drowsiness, a stiff neck, dehydration, or a child who is becoming much more unwell.
