Which specialist treats patellar dislocation?

A patellar dislocation occurs when the kneecap moves out of its normal groove, often after a twist, blow, or awkward landing. The specialist checks alignment, ligament stability, bone or cartilage injury, swelling, and previous episodes. A knee cartilage injury can accompany the event, so the examination may determine whether imaging is needed.

Do not force the kneecap back into place or repeatedly test the knee. After assessment, care may include temporary protection, knee bracing, swelling control, and physiotherapy to restore movement and strengthen the thigh and hip. An orthopaedic knee surgeon may discuss MPFL reconstruction when instability returns or structural findings make an operation reasonable.

Get urgent assessment if the kneecap is visibly out of position, the knee has a visible deformity after injury, you cannot bear weight, or the foot becomes numb, pale, or unusually cold. Prompt review is also sensible when the knee repeatedly gives way.
