Which specialist treats gastroenteritis?

Gastroenteritis is inflammation of the stomach and bowel, commonly causing diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and sometimes fever or loss of appetite. A GP asks about the start of symptoms, fluid intake, recent travel, sick contacts, and medicines, then checks for dehydration or another cause. Most episodes are managed with supportive care, but persistent or severe illness may need further assessment.

Sip fluids regularly, using Oral Rehydration Therapy when vomiting or diarrhoea has caused substantial fluid loss. Take small amounts often if nausea makes drinking difficult, and return gradually to ordinary food as tolerated. A GP Consultation can help with symptom review and advice. Arrange prompt assessment for very little urine, dizziness when standing, unusual sleepiness, dry mouth, repeated vomiting, blood in stool or vomit, severe abdominal pain, or symptoms that are not improving. Seek advice early for infants, older adults, pregnancy, or major long-term illness. Emergency help is needed for collapse, confusion, or difficulty breathing.
