Which specialist treats common cold?

The common cold is a viral infection affecting the upper airways. A primary care clinician can assess the pattern of symptoms, check for another problem and advise on comfort measures. Symptoms may include an itchy throat, headache, fever, hoarse voice or temporary loss of smell. A cold can sometimes be followed by laryngitis or a middle-ear infection, which may need a different assessment. Antibiotics do not treat viruses, so treatment decisions depend on the examination and your overall health.

Rest, drink enough fluid to avoid dehydration and follow the label directions for any over-the-counter medicine. Avoid sharing drinks, towels or close face-to-face contact while you are unwell, and wash your hands regularly. Arrange a GP review if symptoms are not improving, keep returning, or are difficult to distinguish from another infection. Mention long-term conditions and regular medicines before taking a new product.

Seek urgent medical help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, confusion, dehydration or a rapidly worsening condition. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent high fever, severe ear pain, severe headache with neck stiffness, or symptoms that improve and then become much worse. Babies, older adults and people with weakened immunity may need earlier advice.
