Urodynamic testing examines how the bladder stores urine and how the urethra and pelvic muscles work during emptying. The team may measure pressure, urine flow and bladder sensation while you fill and empty your bladder. A urogynaecologist interprets the pattern with your symptoms, medicines and examination findings. This can help distinguish problems such as leakage with pressure, difficulty emptying, urgency or mixed bladder symptoms, although the test is only one part of assessment.

Follow the clinic's instructions about drinking fluids and arriving with a comfortably full bladder. Tell the team about pregnancy, urinary infection symptoms, recent procedures, medicines and any difficulty passing urine. You may be asked to keep a bladder diary. During testing, describe sensations clearly and report discomfort; the staff can explain each stage and adjust the process when appropriate. Ask how and when your results will be discussed.

After testing, mild temporary stinging can occur, but contact your healthcare team if you develop fever, worsening pain, inability to pass urine, blood that does not settle, or symptoms that concern you. Seek urgent care for severe pain, marked weakness, confusion or signs of a serious infection. Do not wait for the scheduled result discussion if you cannot empty your bladder.
