Spinal manipulation is a hands-on treatment in which a trained practitioner applies a controlled movement to a spinal joint. Chiropractors commonly provide it, and osteopaths may also use it within a broader manual assessment. The practitioner should first ask about your symptoms, medical history, medicines, previous injuries, and neurological symptoms. They should examine movement and nerve function before choosing a technique. Manipulation is not the same as a general massage, and a forceful technique is not appropriate for every neck or back problem. The practitioner should explain the intended benefit and other options.

Choose a registered practitioner whose training and scope include spinal manipulation. At the appointment, describe exactly where symptoms are felt, when they began, and whether pain travels into an arm or leg. Tell the practitioner about osteoporosis, recent trauma, inflammatory disease, blood-thinning medicines, surgery, or unusual headaches. Ask what technique is proposed, what you may feel afterwards, and how progress will be reviewed. Stop the session if you develop sharp, radiating, or unfamiliar symptoms.
