Which specialist performs spinal cord stimulation?

A pain-management specialist, often an interventional pain physician, leads spinal cord stimulation assessment and treatment. Depending on the case, the team may also include a neurosurgeon or orthopedic spine surgeon, a psychologist, and rehabilitation clinicians.

The specialist reviews the pain diagnosis, previous treatments, medicines, physical function, and goals. They check whether the pain pattern is appropriate for neuromodulation and explain a temporary trial before any longer-term implant is considered. The evaluation also covers device care, possible limits, and follow-up adjustments.

Request assessment through a pain-management service with experience in spinal cord stimulation. Bring imaging, procedure notes, medication information, and a diary describing pain, sleep, walking, work, and activities. Tell the team about infections, blood-thinning medicines, implanted devices, mood changes, and any difficulty managing daily tasks.

Spinal cord stimulation is not an emergency treatment for sudden neurological symptoms. Seek immediate medical care for new paralysis, rapidly progressing weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, or severe back pain with fever. After a procedure, report increasing redness, drainage, fever, severe headache, or new weakness promptly.
