Which specialist performs skin cancer screening?

During a skin check, the dermatologist asks about new or changing marks, previous skin problems, sun exposure and personal or family history. They inspect the skin, including areas that are easy to overlook, and may use a magnifying examination tool to view patterns within a lesion. If a mark needs further assessment, the dermatologist may recommend monitoring, imaging or a biopsy. Screening is an examination, not a diagnosis of cancer by itself.

Before the appointment, note when you first noticed any changing spot and whether it has altered in size, shape, colour, surface or sensation. Remove heavy makeup or nail coverings if they could hide marks. Tell the dermatologist about medicines that affect bleeding, previous biopsies and any difficulty checking your scalp, back or other hard-to-see areas. Ask how often your skin should be reviewed.

Book a prompt dermatology appointment for a mark that is changing, bleeding, repeatedly crusting, not healing, becoming painful or noticeably different from your other moles. Do not wait for a routine check if a lesion is rapidly changing or an open sore is persisting. A changing mark warrants assessment; it does not by itself establish cancer.

Ask which marks need monitoring, whether photographs would help compare changes, whether a biopsy is recommended and what warning signs should trigger an earlier visit. If you have many moles or a past skin cancer, ask for a personalised follow-up plan.
