Which specialist performs skin biopsy?

The dermatologist examines the area, cleans the skin and numbs it with local anaesthetic. Depending on the concern, they may use a shave, punch or excision technique. The sample goes to a pathology laboratory, where a pathology specialist examines the tissue and sends a report to the treating clinician. A biopsy can help distinguish between inflammatory, infectious, benign and cancerous skin changes; the need for one does not by itself establish a diagnosis.

Tell the dermatologist about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, bleeding problems, implanted devices and previous reactions to local anaesthetic. Follow the wound-care instructions, keep the dressing as advised and avoid picking at a scab. Ask when the result is expected and how it will be communicated. If a sample needs stitches, clarify when they should be checked or removed.

Contact the clinic for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, wound separation or an allergic reaction. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty or swelling of the face or throat. Keep the follow-up appointment so the pathology result can be explained and any next step arranged.

Ask which biopsy method is planned, how the wound will be closed, when the pathology report should arrive, and what will happen if the result needs treatment or another sample.
