Short answer

A pathologist performs a pathology second opinion by reviewing tissue samples, reports and the information needed to reassess a diagnosis.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a second opinion can cover

A pathologist examines slides or tissue material and may review the original report, clinical history and relevant imaging information. The review can clarify the type of cells, features that guide treatment, or whether additional testing is useful. A medical, radiation or surgical oncologist may provide a separate opinion about treatment after considering the confirmed diagnosis and your overall health.

How to arrange the review

Ask the treating hospital how to request the pathology material and reports, and confirm that the reviewing specialist has the clinical history and scans needed for context. Keep copies of reports and questions. Tell your current team that you are seeking another view so appointments and time-sensitive treatment decisions can be coordinated safely.

When not to delay contact

A second opinion should not delay urgent care for severe symptoms such as uncontrolled pain, serious breathing difficulty, heavy bleeding, confusion or sudden weakness. Contact the oncology team promptly if your condition changes while records are being transferred or if you are unsure when treatment needs to start.

Questions to ask

Ask: Is the second opinion for pathology, treatment, or both? Which slides, blocks, scans and reports are required? When should I expect the review? Could the result change the proposed treatment or need for further testing?

Questions people ask

Is a second opinion performed by one specialist for every cancer question?

No. A pathologist reviews tissue diagnosis, while an oncology specialist may review treatment choices. The right reviewer depends on what you want assessed.

Can a second opinion change the diagnosis?

A review may confirm the original interpretation, clarify it, or identify a need for further testing. Your treating team can explain what any difference means for care.
