A plastic surgeon examines the scar's location, length, width, depth, colour, movement and relationship to nearby skin. They also ask how it formed, how it healed and whether it has changed. Surgery may involve removing part of the scar and closing the skin in a way that aims to make the mark less noticeable; it cannot erase a scar or guarantee a particular appearance. Some scars are better approached with non-surgical care, especially when the main concern is raised, itchy or discoloured tissue.
