A gynaecologic oncologist is a doctor trained in surgery for cancers of the cervix, uterus, ovaries and related organs. During a radical hysterectomy, the surgeon removes the womb and cervix and may remove nearby tissues and lymph nodes, depending on the cancer and the planned operation.

The operation may be open, laparoscopic or robot-assisted when suitable. The surgeon discusses how the procedure could affect fertility, sexual function, bladder or bowel function, and whether additional cancer treatment may be needed.

Bring biopsy and scan reports, a medicines list, previous operation details and questions about recovery. Ask whether the surgeon recommends an open or minimally invasive approach and why.
