Which specialist performs proton therapy?

The radiation oncologist reviews your diagnosis and scans, decides whether proton therapy is suitable, and defines the treatment area and dose. A medical physicist checks the equipment and treatment plan, a dosimetrist helps shape the plan, and technologists position you and operate the treatment system.

Planning can include an imaging appointment and an immobilisation device to help you keep the same position. The team explains the expected effects based on the body region treated and coordinates with surgeons or medical oncologists when other care is part of the plan.

Bring your medicine list, allergy details, scan reports, and information about implanted devices or difficulty lying still. Ask how planning works, whether you need special preparation, how to care for the treated skin, and who will manage medicines or symptoms between appointments. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the treatment area unless the centre gives different advice.

Tell the radiation team about new or worsening pain, skin breakdown, difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, diarrhoea, urinary changes, or unusual tiredness, depending on the treatment area. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, or sudden weakness. Keep scheduled appointments unless the treatment centre tells you otherwise.
