Debulking surgery, also called cytoreductive surgery, removes as much visible ovarian cancer as the surgical team can safely treat. A gynaecologic oncologist has specialist training in cancers of the female reproductive organs and complex pelvic surgery. Depending on where disease is found, the operation may involve the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, nearby tissue, lymph nodes, or portions of other abdominal organs. The exact plan depends on scans, examination findings, overall health, and the aim of treatment.

A medical oncologist, radiologist, anaesthetist, pathologist, specialist nurses, and other professionals may contribute to planning and recovery.
