Depending on the location, this may be an orthopedic surgeon whose practice includes knee, hip, foot and ankle, shoulder, hand, or other reconstructive bone and joint surgery. A sports-medicine orthopedic surgeon may also perform selected osteotomies when the procedure addresses alignment and load around an active joint.

Osteotomy is bone realignment surgery. The surgeon makes a planned cut in a bone, changes its angle or position, and stabilises it while it heals. The aim may be to redistribute pressure across a joint, correct a deformity, improve limb alignment, or support function after an injury or earlier operation.

The specialist needs to assess the source of the alignment problem rather than choosing a procedure from a symptom alone. Assessment can include an examination, standing or movement-based X-rays, and other imaging when the joint surface, cartilage, or surrounding tissues need closer review.

Start with an orthopedic consultation and bring previous scans, operation notes, a list of medicines, and a clear description of pain, stiffness, activity limits, and any change in walking or limb use. Tell the surgeon about smoking, diabetes, bone-health problems, allergies, and medicines that affect bleeding or healing.

Ask whether the proposed operation is intended to preserve a joint, what bone would be cut, how it would be fixed, and what rehabilitation will involve. A physiotherapist may help before and after surgery with strength, movement, walking technique, and a gradual return to daily activities, but the orthopedic surgeon is the clinician who plans and performs the osteotomy.

Arrange an orthopedic review when persistent pain, a visible change in limb alignment, worsening limp, or reduced joint function is interfering with work, sleep, exercise, or routine movement. These findings can have several causes and do not by themselves establish that an osteotomy is needed.

After an osteotomy, contact the surgical team urgently for increasing wound redness or drainage, fever, severe or escalating pain, new numbness or weakness, a cold or unusually pale limb, or sudden calf swelling or breathlessness. Follow the discharge instructions for the operation because recovery and weight-bearing limits vary by bone and fixation method.

Useful questions include: What alignment problem is being treated? Which part of the bone will be cut? What alternatives fit my examination and imaging? How will the bone be held in position? When can I bear weight, drive, work, and exercise? Which symptoms should prompt an urgent call?
