Which specialist performs NIPT?

NIPT analyses cell-free DNA in a pregnant person's blood to screen for selected chromosome conditions. Maternal-fetal medicine specialists have advanced training in complex pregnancy care and can help decide whether the test fits your circumstances and how to interpret its result. The blood draw itself is usually performed by a phlebotomist, nurse, midwife, or other trained member of the clinical team. NIPT is a screening test, so a result that needs follow-up does not by itself confirm a condition.

Discuss NIPT with your obstetrician, midwife, or maternal-fetal medicine team. Ask what conditions the laboratory screens for, when the sample can be taken, how results are delivered, and what follow-up is available. Tell the team about the pregnancy's gestational stage, multiple pregnancy, donor egg use, or a previous chromosome test, because these details can affect counselling and interpretation. Consider what information you would want before choosing the test.

NIPT is not an emergency test. Contact your maternity team promptly for vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid leakage, fever, or reduced fetal movement. For questions about a result, arrange timely counselling with the clinician who ordered it rather than trying to interpret an isolated report without context.
