Understanding the imaging team

The radiographer positions the body part and operates the X-ray equipment, sometimes taking more than one view. The radiologist examines the images for findings such as changes in bone alignment or an injury and sends a report to the requesting clinician. An orthopaedic or emergency clinician then uses that report alongside your examination.

Before an X-ray

Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant or might be pregnant, and follow instructions about removing jewellery or clothing with metal. Explain where the pain or injury is located and mention any difficulty standing or holding a position. Ask the requesting clinic how you will receive the report.

Warning signs needing assessment

Seek urgent care for a visible deformity, severe pain after an injury, inability to use the limb, new weakness or numbness, or a hand or foot that is cold or pale. A routine X-ray should not delay treatment when circulation or nerve function may be affected.

Questions to ask

Ask what the X-ray is checking, whether additional views or another type of imaging may be needed, when the report will be ready, and which symptoms require a quicker review.
