What the roles mean

The radiographer positions you, explains the scan, and operates the CT equipment. The radiologist is the medical specialist who reviews the images and prepares a report for the clinician who requested the examination. An orthopaedic doctor, emergency doctor or another treating clinician may request the scan and use the report to guide care.

Before your scan

Ask the referring clinic which body region will be scanned and whether preparation is needed. Tell the team if you may be pregnant, have kidney problems, or have had a reaction to contrast material. Wear practical clothing and follow instructions about removing metal items. Bring earlier images or reports when the imaging centre requests them.

When urgent assessment matters

Seek urgent care for a new inability to move a limb, severe pain after an injury, obvious deformity, loss of circulation, or numbness with weakness. A CT appointment should not delay emergency assessment when these symptoms are present.

Ask why CT is preferred, whether contrast is planned, when the report will reach the requesting clinician, and what symptoms should prompt help while you wait.
